For Oblivion. And some other stuff, I suppose.

Hearthstone

#1 Post by TroyBlade » Fri Feb 14, 2014 12:24 pm

I thought I'd take the boring Hearthstone chat out of Oblivion..

After a couple of terrible arenas I then got a deck so good that I was actually disappointed to only go 9 wins. Got rogued twice.

There is a mirror image at the top that's missing from scrolling down..

That deck looks good when you look at the cards! But isn't the mana curve a bit sloppy? It looks to me like the first 2 turns you have to be extra lucky to get a good footing on the board?

I don't know how Arena works exactly but could it be that you stomped the first opponents so hard that the "worthy opponent" mechanics picked way harder players to beat later on?

I still have to finish my current 2/1 arena as I didn't play yesterday.
Do you finish your arena's in one go? Or stop playing after a couple of matches?
Playing Skyrim on PC and watching youtube video's doesn't work btw. I have to focus to much on the video to do anything else.

I have 7 cards that I can happily play on turns 1 and 2. I would only want 8 in the perfect draft.

I also have a Master Swordsmith which can also be played turn 2 on its own in certain situations though not usually ideal.

Arena matchups do indeed place you against other decks with a similar record, it definitely gets harder as you go along. The matchups are actually revealed somewhere, let me check.

...

No, I couldn't find much other than that if you are 5-0 it will try and find someone for you to play who is 5-0. the exact mechanics on what it looks for if no one is available seems unknown (does it look for 4-0 and 6-0 before 5-1, for example).

I usually finish my arena runs but if I only had 30 minutes to play I would happily start an arena knowing that I couldn't finish it.

I think it's marginally advantageous to play them all in one go simply because it's easier to remember what you have in your deck.

Although if you had 3 Flamestrike, 3 Polymorph, 2 Water Elemental, 2 Yetis, a Fireball and a Sylvanas, it's hard to forget. :)

I'd take more Fireballs over Pyroblasts.

The games definitely last more turns than Magic, on average.

But the obvious difference, is that in Magic it can take you many more than 7 turns to get to your 7th land. In HS you can play your 7 drops by turn 7 at the latest, guaranteed.

This curve is not perfect but the weakness is that it wanted more 3's and less 4's, but those 4's are AMAZING.

Individual card mulligans help too. As does the fact that every draw you make is a spell.

People commonly play 10 mana spells in HS (Pyroblast, Mind Control).

If you look at Trump's one and only 12-0 arena deck, it has 3x6, 2x7, 1x8.

You might argue that's better. You'd probably be right..

Besides, curves are overrated. Prongs are the new curves.

Anyway this supports another point I was going to make actually - arenas are easier on weekend daytime. I get to 4 or 5 wins fairly often (before tanking) by playing new players and/or children, I presume.

To be fair my deck isn't completely useless, the 3 Argent Protectors and 2 Truesilvers are good enough to carry me some way, but this deck has considerable dross in it. Off screen are Fen Creeper, Stormpike Commando, Archmage and War Golem as my only late game.

Sadly I don't have time to continue right now so I'll probably end up 6-3 playing tonight.
